Stitch A Day - Buttonholed Herringbone Stitch

Today's Stitch A Day is Buttonholed Herringbone Stitch. As the name suggests this stitch is made up of Herringbone Stitch and Buttonhole Stitch two stitches we have previously covered here on the HEN Blog. You will find that a lot of stitches are made up of other stitches or use stitches as a foundation. This stitch makes a bold border and today we are working it in cotton pearl thread, which is a twisted thread with a shine that comes in different weights.

Ok, to work Buttonholed Herringbone Stitch, first work a row of Herringbone Stitches (refer to the how to here). Next using a blunt needle throughout, bring your needle up at 1 and work a buttonhole stitch over the first thread as shown below. Continue working stitches over this first arm of the herringbone stitch making sure to pack stitches close together as shown. When you get to the top of the intersection work a buttonhole stitch over the crossed end and then continue down the other side of the herringbone stitch. Repeat till all of your herringbone stitches are covered with buttonhole stitches. This stitch really produces a really pretty border with a ric-rac lace effect.
